Research Trends Regarding Children in Multicultural Families in Korea

Abstract
This research sought to explore the trends in empirical research on children in multicultural families. This research exercise analyzed 273 publications in total, published either in registered journals or in registration candidate journals from the National Research Foundation of Korea. This research paper examined the frequency of publication by year of publication, research topics, research methods, subjects of the research, and research areas. Crosstabs analysis was conducted for further investigation of the research trends. This review has identified a rapid increase in the number of research papers on multicultural families in Korea since 2006, and has established a clear a prevalence of quantitative approaches to this area of inquiry. The main topics of such research were perceptions and attitudes towards multiculturalism and multicultural families, adaptation and mal-adaptation of people with multicultural backgrounds, and understanding of the current situation for the purposes of policy formulation. While early research was mostly based in Metropolitan areas including Seoul and Kyeonggi-do, the research areas have gradually expanded to cover the whole of the country. Children from multicultural families have been the most commonly studied research subjects, followed by teachers, and children from ordinary Korean families.
